At Colorado Boat Center, we get a lot of questions this time of year about Colorado’s boating laws, especially around boat registration and operator requirements. Whether you’re new to boating or just need a refresher, here’s a quick review of what you need to know to stay legal and safe on the water.
Q. Do I need a Boat Operator’s License?
A: Not in Colorado.
A person 18 years of age or older may operate a motorboat or personal watercraft on Colorado’s public waters.
Those under age 14 are not permitted to operate any motorboat or personal watercraft.
Those 14-17 years of age may operate a boat only if he or she has passed an approved boating safety course and has a Boating Safety Certificate issued by the course provider. This group of operators must carry the Boater Education Card onboard the vessel and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer. There are fines for noncompliance.
Q. Do I need to register my boat?
A: Yes.
Under Colorado’s boating laws, any boat with a motor or sail operated in Colorado on any public waters must be registered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Boats from other states may be operated in Colorado for up to 60 days with a current registration from the owner’s state.
To register, you will need a state registration form and proof of ownership.
You must paint or attach a decal with your registration number on both sides of the bow of your boat. The registration number must be at least three inches in height and of a contrasting color to the hull. You must also affix the annual registration decal to the left of the registration number.
In addition, motorized boats and sailboats must have an Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) Stamp ($25) prior to launching in Colorado. You can purchase the ANS stamp at public boat launch sites where CWP maintains an office, or online.
If you purchase your boat at Colorado Boat Center, we will help you arrange for its registration with the state.
You can register by mail or in person at any Colorado Parks and Wildlife office–and there are several in the greater Denver area. Check the website for a list of locations and maps. The CPW website also has a downloadable application form.
There is a registration fee: boats under 20 feet are $60.25; boats 20 feet to 29 feet 11 inches are $70.25 and boats over 30 feet are $100.25.

Q. Do I need to register my boat every year?
A: Yes. Colorado’s boating laws require annual renewal of your boat registration. Visit the CPW website for more information. If your boat was registered last year, you should receive a registration renewal form in the mail.
At Colorado Boat Center, we’re here to help you stay informed and compliant with Colorado’s boating laws. If you have questions or need help, call us at CBC and we’ll try to guide you in the right direction. But don’t get caught with an expired registration or no ANS stamp–that could get expensive!
