While the weather might still be cold, the calendar is creeping closer to the start of the boating season. Warm days spent on the water will be here before you know it, and soon it will be time to get your boat ready for action. Here are 10 tips to help you get your boat ready for spring.
- Check your boat’s exterior for any blisters or cracks. Make any needed repairs and do any needed repainting. Then wash your hull and give it a fresh coat of wax.
- A damaged propeller will sap your fuel efficiency. Check your propeller for any dents or dings.
- Make sure that your boat’s battery is charged and its connections are clean. Once it is charged, top it off with distilled water.
- Small animals often chew wiring in boat engine compartments over the winter. Inspect your compartment to make sure your wiring and electrical connections are in good shape.
- Check your oil and top off your fluids.
- Inspect your spark plugs and fuel filters to see if they should be changed. Also, inspect your hoses and clamps.
- Look for any chafing on your dock and anchor lines.
- Make sure your bilge pump is working properly.
- Be sure to have required safety gear on board and check that it is all in working order. Make sure you have Coast Guard-approved PFDs, as well as throwable floatation devices. Check the expiration dates on your flares and fire extinguishers, and make sure you have a first aid kit.
- If you trailer your boat, inspect your trailer. Make sure the tires are in good condition and are properly inflated. Inspect your lights and brakes, and grease your wheel bearings. Also check your trailer frame for rust, and do any sanding and painting if needed.
